what do you need to know or do?
Firstly you must be over 18 years of age in order that our insurance
with the BMC is valid. You should have basic knowledge to the
activities that you wish to participate in with us, this is to
ensure that all members are able to be safe on activities and
finally complete the application form and send it with payment to the club

CLIMBING
The
South Devon Mountaineering Club is a club for all standard of
climbing and currently has members that enjoy seconding 'VD' grades
and other that lead well into the 'E' grades. The Club is not
a teaching club although knowledge is passed on just by climbing
with us and asking questions as a result we would ask that members
have basic ability in climbing, the equipment and safety procedures,
this should include;
-
You have your own equipment including
harness and helmet, boots and chalk bag, the club does not own equipment,
-
You should be able to put on a harness and tie in with the correct knots,
-
Be able to safely use a belay device on a top
rope and possibly a lead climber,
-
Have knowledge of climbing calls and other
climbing safety procedures.
If you do not have the basic knowledge we would
recommend that you go on a short training course to learn the
basics, The Mill near South Molton would be able to provide this
training if required.
We do however hold beginners evenings but these are
generally aimed at the members that are mainly walkers that fancy a
go at climbing.

WALKING
The South
Devon Mountaineering Club carry out walks both in the UK and abroad
on a regular bases and although this activity generally does not
have the inherit risks that climbing does there are still things you
need to know to be safe on the hills, the level of training/
knowledge needed does depend on the level you wish to operate at, a
day walk on Dartmoor requires less skill than a 3 day walk above the
snow line in the Alps. In general you should have the
following knowledge;
-
You should know what to wear, what equipment to
carry and know how to use it,
-
Basic knowledge of how to read a map and
compass,
-
Know how to raise help in an emergency.

APPLICATION FORMS
We normally ask that you come along to 2 or 3 club
activities (not away trips as this required you to be a member for
insurance purposes) to allow you to get to know other members and to let
other members get to know you. If you would then like to
formally join the club complete the application form
and send it to the Secretary along with your cheque.

WHERE
DOES MY MONEY GO?
The majority of your annual
membership fee goes directly to the BMC for the required 3rd Party
insurance, you are able to upgrade this directly with the BMC to
individual membership for additional benifits. The remaining
money is used to maintain the web-site, newsletters and other
expenses, it is also used to book huts in advance to ensure that the
members organising trips are not using their own funds to support
the club. |
